Bournemouth & Poole College is a Dorset based further education provider offering an array of courses for post 16 students. Toilet refurbishment is high on the building improvements agenda with many washrooms last refurbished over 25 years ago.
The College boasts a multi-site campus and aspires to offer its students facilities that match the quality of its teaching. The washroom refurbishment specification was established following consultation between Lan Services washroom design team and College Facilities Managers. The brief was for the rooms to be robust and designed to last but also contain water and energy efficiency initiatives. The resulting design will be rolled out to all washrooms within the College campus starting with the main male and female reception toilets.

Specification
The washroom refurbishment specification was established following consultation between Lan Services washroom design team and College Facilities Managers. The brief was for the rooms to be robust and designed to last but also contain water and energy efficiency initiatives. The resulting design will be rolled out to all washrooms within the College campus starting with the main male and female reception toilets.
The specification included solid grade laminate (SGL) toilet cubicles with stainless steel hardware (Ultra range). The robust nature of these materials will ensure that the opportunity for vandalism is limited. A purpose-built service void exists between the male and female toilet rooms, accessed by a single lockable door. Concealed toilet cisterns were installed within this void along with all plumbing and pipework.
Products
The College opted for the Armitage Shanks Aridian (S6321) waterless urinal solution in the male toilet room. These waterless urinals require no water to flush urine away, instead relying on a renewable cartridge to treat smells and bacteria. The ceramic urinal bowls were wall mounted with the waste pipes concealed within the service void, easily accessed by maintenance staff.
Anti-slip vinyl flooring is coved up walls where it meets mocha ceramic wall tiles. The suspended ceiling grid ensured that the walls, floors and ceiling finishes are safe and easy to maintain. LED panel lights, installed within the ceiling grid, will help the College save energy for years to come.
The College’s colour choice for the toilet refurbishment matched their brand. Blue toilet cubicles and vanity units stand out against the grey floor and mocha wall tiles. The colour selection should conceal most scuffs and wear meaning the washrooms look newer for longer.
The programme of works stretched over a 4-week period and was carried out during the College summer holidays when most students were away for the summer break.
The toilet refurbishment work was carried out to the complete satisfaction of the College with the specification likely to be rolled out to other toilet facilities during coming holiday periods.
“Lan Services carried out refurbishment works to 3 of our larger W/C facilities in the College. The projects ran smoothly from planning to completion and the work was finished to a very high standard. All trades involved worked with great consideration for our staff and students. I would not hesitate to use Lan Services for future projects.”
