Project for UK Theme Park
Busy theme parks often pose time restrictions when it comes to any maintenance and building projects. Including toilet block refurbishment works, as all work needs to be carried out with little to no effect on the day-to- day running of the site.
In the run up to the opening of a brand new attraction, a large UK theme park approached us to redesign and refurbish the washrooms nearest to the new ride.
The project consisted of a self contained toilet block refurbishment which housed a large male toilet room, a large female toilet room as well as a dedicated disabled washroom. By being involved from the very beginning, we were able to guide the client during the specification process and change the layout of the rooms. By re-configuring the internal space, we were able to ensure the rooms had a better flow for users in this high traffic environment. One of the most important things for the client was that the rooms looked modern and bright.
At peak times, such as bank holidays and weekends, the site sees a tremendous amount of footfall in the tens of thousands, so the toilet block washrooms also needed to have a high level of durability.
For this reason we installed solid grade laminate (SGL) toilet cubicles. SGL is a material that’s completely impervious to water, so no swelling of laminate layers, and the material is also available in an immense array of colours. The washrooms were fitted in a vibrant green, white and black colourway, which flowed through from the cubicles to the vanity units and duct panel systems.
Solid surface vanity tops were installed, which are both aesthetically pleasing, but also easy to maintain as any scratches buff out easily.
At a time of any refurbishment, it’s always sensible to look at what energy saving initiatives can be put in place and the client was very keen to look at ways to conserve water usage. We implemented eco flush cisterns, which use less water than the average 6-litre cistern. We also installed push button, non-concussive Franke taps that only emit water for a controlled amount of time. This removes the risk of taps being left on absent-mindedly and also brings down the annual water usage of a washroom.
To keep the toilet block refurbishment project at a sensible budget, we used a 250mm x 400mm wall tile, and also installed solid grade laminate board behind hand dryers – an area which is prone to discolouration in grout lines.
We positioned the hand soap dispensers so that they fell into the wash basins, meaning they never dripped or spilled onto the vanity top. This further improved the easy clean nature of the washroom.
Our Project Management team followed this project through from initial inception and ensured the design and careful management of trades were done to a timely and efficient manner, resulting in a comprehensive toilet block refurbishment being carried out on time and on budget ahead of this major new attraction’s opening.
