This popular Primary School based in Bournemouth, Dorset undertook a complete school toilet refurbishment and re-design of all their children’s washrooms. Stourfield School enlisted the help of Bournemouth Council to come up with the washroom design to two pairs of toilet rooms and appointed Lan Services to conduct the refurbishment work.

In the first area, a radical approach of creating a unisex washroom was achieved by removing dividing walls between a set of girls and boy’s toilet rooms. By opening up the front façade, an open plan unisex washroom area was created. The school maintained the same number of toilet cubicles and wash basins but created an environment where bullying was less likely and the facilities were a more pleasant place to visit.

The second toilet area was a more straight forward refurbishment. All existing floors, walls and ceiling coverings were renewed and the washroom fixtures replaced.

Walls were tiled up to half room height using plain white ceramic wall tiles, the top half was painted. Floors were laid with anti-slip vinyl flooring with coved upstands around all perimeter walls.

Bright, vibrant lime green and purple school toilet cubicles were chosen. The cubicles are designed with lower height doors so as teaching staff can peer over and view inside a locked cubicle should the need arise.

The unisex toilet room contained a central, island vanity unit with matching green laminate worktop. The unit is made from high pressure laminate with inset ceramic basins. Non-concussive (push button) taps were selected to save water. The particular model of tap chosen offers a light touch so as to help children who are unable to apply sufficient pressure.

Armitage Shanks sanitary ware was chosen for both areas. Back to wall Sandringham toilets were installed with concealed cisterns. Wall hung wash basins helped to save space in the second set of toilet rooms with a semi pedestal below concealing traps and pipework.

The school were overwhelmed with the end result and have received very positive comments from staff and parents concerned with anti-bullying.
