Lan Services were recently tasked with a number of school washroom installations at London Academy. Commercial Washrooms recently produced a school washroom design for two student washrooms and two staff washrooms at Edgware’s London Academy.

London Academy is one of the largest secondary schools and sixth forms in the city and we had previously in conjunction with our washroom installation teams designed and refurbished 12 of the washrooms at the seven-year-old site.

Student School Washroom Installation

The washrooms for the students are accessible from inside and outside of the building and so are used by pupils during sports activities. Often while wearing soiled outdoor shoes and boots with studs. Therefore the flooring had to be exceptionally hard wearing. Lan Services installed a 4mm thick vinyl flooring which is of industrial specification and will cope with the heavy footfall.

As is popular in many washrooms for convenience and hygiene blank IPS duct paneling was fitted in the washroom. These are installed in the cubicles and to the wall the wash stations are installed. Duct sets provide a flat smooth surface that is both easy to clean and hard wearing. They also conceal the working parts of the wash and dry stations and toilets, protecting them against tampering. Other wall surfaces were also tiled to provide an easy clean surface for ease of maintenance.

Washroom cubicles are full height for privacy and they, and the duct paneling were supplied in solid grade laminate with stainless steel hardware, these too were specified because of their hard wearing nature. Solid grade laminate is the most hard wearing of all laminate panels.

The washroom specification also called for Thrii anti vandal wash stations to be installed. Manufactured of a heard wearing solid surface material they are recess mounted into the duct paneling. The Thrii wash station provides a full hand washing solution, with soap dispenser, water rinse and warm air dry in one unit. Aside from being an exceptionally hard wearing unit they are also very economical on water and energy in comparison to similar solutions.

Continuing the anti-vandal and hard wearing theme of the school washroom installation, the toilet pans specified and fitted are of a polyester resin construction, with an anti-vandal toilet seat fitted which bolts through the rear duct paneling.

School Staff Washroom Installation

The specification for the staff washroom refurbishment however did not require such hard wearing washroom fixtures and fittings. Solely for the use of staff and guests of the school, it will be much less frequently used. The school staff toilet design called for a more adult and professional feel to them.

Solid grade laminate (SGL) IPS duct panelling was still chosen with matching toilet cubicles, however this time it was for the quality of finish and colour availability rather than its anti-vandal credentials.

Armitage Shanks commercial grade vitreous china white toilets were installed in the washroom. Coupled with sensor flush (which was also used in the pupil toilets), which promotes better hygiene.

Hand washing is taken care of by with an attractive solid surface vanity top within which moulded washbasins are mounted. Due to the limited space in the staff toilets we incorporated Dyson Airblade taps into the school washroom installation. Precluding the need for separately installed hand dryer. The Dyson Airblade taps have an automatic hand dryer built in, as well as sensor activated water flow.
