Corfe Castle is a picturesque village set in the heart of the Purbeck Hills in Dorset. The village takes it’s name from the 11th century castle; an extremely popular tourist attraction maintained by the National Trust.
At the foot of the castle lies a public toilet block frequently used by locals and tourists alike when visiting the iconic attraction. The toilet block consists of male, female and disabled facilities and was identified to be in need of refurbishment. Purbeck District Council approached Lan Services to help with the washroom design and specification.
Use of the facilities is by the general public and the fixtures used had to be robust and resistant to potential vandalism. In addition, the council were eager to include as many energy efficient and water saving initiatives as possible.
The toilet refurbishment specification included anti slip porcelain floor tiles and easy to clean white PVC wall cladding and ceiling finishes. This left all exposed surfaces renewed, easy to maintain and safe.
Armitage Shanks commercial sanitary ware was chosen as a cost efficient modern solution which benefits from ease of maintenance and excellent availability should the toilets or urinals require replacement. Vanity tops were manufactured from Tristone, a modern solid surface material known for its hard-wearing nature and the ease of repair should damage occur. Solid Grade Laminate under frames and access panels conceal all pipework beneath the worktops increasing the aesthetic appeal and ensuring easy access for maintenance.
The installation of sensor taps and sensor flush controls will ensure that the toilet block benefits from modern water saving initiatives through their timed flow nature. No water will be wasted and vandals should be unable to flood the washrooms. New energy efficient water heaters were also installed within the service void.
New external doors were installed and the gutters, soffits and fascia boards were refreshed. Modern PIR operated external light fittings were fitted along with new signage. This left the outside of the toilet block rejuvenated, helping improve the look and feel of the local area.
The project was completed during the quiet winter season ready for the busy summer visitors. The council are extremely pleased with the overall finish and the specification is likely to be rolled out to other public toilet blocks in the local area in due course.
