Muswell Hill Golf Club, London

We were approached by one of north London’s premier golf clubs to improve the washroom facilities for its members. Muswell Hill Golf Club was originally founded in 1893 and although the clubhouse is not nearly as old, the washrooms were in need of some modernisation.

The renovation work to the male and female washing areas took place as part of a planned schedule of improvement works for 2017. After an initial consultation, LAN Services provided CAD drawings, a full specification including quantity surveyance, and a 3D visual. This step proved invaluable to the golf club, allowing the committee to evaluate the proposed works ahead of breaking ground.

The existing washrooms were very well maintained, but required some significant preparation work before we could begin installation. This involved the removal of several layers of tiles, which had been layered on top of one another over the years.

Once back to the original floors and walls, we began creating these elegantly designed washrooms. The client wanted to be careful not to overstep the heritage of the golf club, and wanted something that embraced modern functionality and smartness, but without going too contemporary and cold.

We installed a Dorset Wooliscroft quarry floor tile that is approved for non-slip use, making it ideal for washrooms and shower areas. We also used a porcelain wall tile in graphite grey, which further added to the smart, clean atmosphere of the washrooms. This was contrasted with a custom feature wall surrounding a solid surface hand wash area, which was clad in cedar and stained.

Rather than a series of shower trays, we created a wetroom environment. This involved making sure the floor in the shower area fell away towards new gulley drains. After surveying the plumbing system, we installed new shower pumps to ensure high-pressure functionality of the showers. By the open male showering area we fitted a bespoke glass towel shelf, while in the female showering area individual shower enclosures were created to give a little more privacy.

It’s important to create ventilation in any washroom, particularly those with showering facilities. This helps maintain humidity levels and prevents damp, but also helps keep the air smelling fresh. In both washrooms we included a ventilation system that was concealed within the ceiling, helping maintain the clean aesthetics of the finished wash space.

For energy efficiency, we installed LED lights throughout, all activated by PIR lighting sensors, which only switch on when there is a user in the washroom. To deliver further savings on energy usage, we also incorporated sensor activated flushes on the urinals and toilets and installed the Biodrier Lite hand dryer.

Within the cubicles we concealed all the pipework and services within a half height duct system. Both the ducting panels and the washroom cubicles were made of Solid Grade Laminate, a highly durable, water resistant material that carried a walnut veneer finish.

Adjoining the female wash and shower rooms, we created a vanity room that had a large format mirror and Solid Surface countertop with integrated hair dryers. This space was also home to a bespoke wardrobe to be used by members for storing eveningwear.
